The supreme, profound, and subtle Dharma
Is rarely encountered in a hundred thousand myriad kalpas
Now that I have heard it, seen it, received and held it
I vow to fully understand the true meaning of the Tathagata

At this time the World-Honored One, rising from samadhi, calm and composed
Spoke to Shariputra of the wisdom of all Buddhas, profound beyond measure
That gate of wisdom is hard to understand, hard to enter
Even the voice-hearers and solitary realizers cannot grasp it

The true reality of all phenomena, only Buddha together with Buddha can fully know
What is called all phenomena — such appearance, such nature
Such substance, such power, such function
Such cause, such condition, such effect
Such recompense, such beginning and end ultimately equal

All Buddhas, honored among the two-legged beings, know that all phenomena are without fixed nature
The Buddha-seeds arise through causes and conditions, and so the One Vehicle is taught
This Dharma abides, this Dharma’s position, ever abiding in the form of the world
Having known this at the place of enlightenment, the Teacher speaks it as skillful means

Hearing this Dharma, doubt no longer arises
Rejoice and make this vow

We too shall become Buddhas, our wishes all fulfilled

May the merit of teaching this Dharma spread to all beings
May we together arouse the bodhi mind and be born together in the Land of Peace and Bliss

The Buddha’s jeweled stupa rose up from the earth
Resting in the sky, he praised and proclaimed
Excellent, excellent, World-Honored Shakyamuni
Able with perfect equality to teach the great wisdom Dharma, the Bodhisattva Dharma
That which the Buddha guards and cherishes, the Wondrous Dharma Lotus Flower Sutra
For the great assembly, predicting and expounding the Dharma, just so, just so
World-Honored Shakyamuni’s teaching all reveals the truth

Since I attained Buddhahood, the kalpas I have passed through
Are countless hundred thousand myriad koti asankhyeyas
Constantly teaching and transforming countless koti beings
Leading them into the Buddha way for measureless kalpas

Some see the Tathagata enter parinirvana
Through skillful means he speaks of entering nirvana
But for those beings who can be guided
The Buddha manifests his body and teaches the Dharma for them

Always with this single thought: how may I cause all beings
To enter the unsurpassed path and swiftly attain the Buddha body

The World-Honored One’s wondrous features, complete — I now ask about them
Disciple of the Buddha, for what causes and conditions is he named Avalokiteshvara

The one complete with wondrous form answers Akshayamati
Listen to Avalokiteshvara’s conduct, well responding throughout every place
His vast vow is deep as the sea, inconceivable through kalpas
Having served many thousands of koti Buddhas, raising the great vow of purity

I shall now explain for you — hearing the name and seeing the body
Bearing him in mind without fail can extinguish all suffering of existence

If someone, harboring intent to harm
Should push you into a great pit of fire
By the power of mindfulness of Avalokiteshvara
That pit of fire turns into a pond

Or if you drift on the great sea
Where dragons, fish, and demons dwell
By the power of mindfulness of Avalokiteshvara
The waves cannot drown you

Or if upon the peak of Mount Sumeru
You are pushed by another to fall
By the power of mindfulness of Avalokiteshvara
You shall stand in the sky like the sun

If anyone receives and upholds the Wondrous Dharma Lotus Flower Sutra
Know that this person is the messenger of the Buddha
Worthy of offerings from all heavenly and human beings
Their blessed virtue is measureless, as vast as the great ocean

May this merit extend to all beings everywhere
May we, together with all sentient beings, all attain the Buddha path
